WHIST Community Choir
A vibrant singing group based within Women's Health in South Tyneside focuses on raising our voices together in harmony for wellbeing, fun and social purpose. The choir continues to grow in confidence and numbers. We perform regularly at women's events on South Tyneside and within the wider North East region, including International Women's Day, the South Tyneside Mela and the 35th Anniversary of Women Against Pit Closures. We raise the roof, sing with a message, and our sense of togetherness is infectious. As one of our members says, "I've found a family again".
Our Place Recorded - Weights and Cakes
Weights and Cakes in Southwick is Sunderland’s sole club officially recognised by British Weightlifting. With a strong commitment to inclusion, this unique gym champions making fitness, training, and sport available to everyone—no matter their background, ability, or level of experience.
The Our Place Recorded team worked with two groups who are regulars at the gym, the Teen Squad and the STASS (strong ass strength squad) Squad to celebrate their place. We were taken on a tour whilst chatting about what this gym means to them at the same time as learning audio production skills. Together, we documented their unique gym journeys and experiences, equipping them with the confidence and skills to continue sharing their own audio stories in the future.

WHIST Community Heritage
Women's Stories : Our Voices
Women's Health in South Tyneside (WHIST) turns 40 in 2026 and to commemorate this we've been helping volunteers and members of the organisation begin to build a timeline video, oral history archive and digital heritage map of South Tyneside women's history.
NE Voice facilitated the initial phase of these anniversary celebrations as part of WHIST's digital literacy programme (funded by the Virgin Money Foundation). Success to date has led to a growing group of highly engaged heritage volunteers, all with improved digital and oral history skills.
The has provided inspiration for the themes and projects in a larger-scale 40th Anniversary project run by WHIST staff with the financial support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Crocodile Collective
The Crocodile Collective is a community heritage podcasting group based at Arts Centre Washington made up of volunteer community members with interests in local history and heritage and creative storytelling. Facilitated by NE Voice and supported by Arts Centre Washington and the University of Sunderland, it meets weekly to produce The Crocodile Collective: Stories of Washington (UK) and beyond, a podcast for anyone interested in history, heritage and everyday stories and sounds from Washington, Tyne and Wear, UK.
The group comprises active retired people and young(er) people. The Wednesday workshops cover a wide range of topics including script writing, audio drama, how to use apps and smartphones, history of radio and podcasting, creative sound techniques, oral history interviewing.
The group have presented their podcasts and methods of working at conferences in Washington, London and Glasgow.
Our Freedom is a nationwide initiative that explores the meaning of freedom, marking eighty years since the end of the Second World War.
Sunderland Culture, at the Arts Centre Washington, brought together a dynamic mix of groups, including Washington Youth Theatre, Right Track Young Musicians Project, Washington Film and Animation Club, and The Crocodile Collective to create an intergenerational and cross-artform creative community. Under the guidance of creative producer Liv Hunt, participants collaborated to produce a multimedia performance, drawing inspiration from stories and reflections on freedom within communities throughout Washington and Sunderland.
What does freedom mean to you? It’s not always easy to answer straight away, but when given a little time, everyone finds their own perspective. The Crocodile Collective went out and about in Washington, talking to locals and gathering their thoughts on what freedom means to them.
